A 10-minute table on a $10 budget.

The Kindling Table arose from a self-imposed design challenge between friends: build a DIY coffee table from only a salvaged piece of glass and a couple of bundles of kindling from the local market. No fasteners or glue would be permitted. As such, the kindling strips are arranged to counterbalance each other and support the glass with no nails, screws, adhesives, or fastening members of any kind. Thanks to the salvaged and repurposed materials, the table was constructed for under $10. Challenge completed, the kindling base has now been glued together for posterity.

Incremental Design

Rachel lays out some of the kindling pieces experimentally. These things happen when two designers stay up late drinking wine.

Stacked & Balanced

None of the pieces are glued or affixed in any way. In fact, some of them are only staying in place due to the weight above them, and the friction of the unfinished wood.

Clean Lines & Rustic Simplicity

The kindling pieces remain unfinished: neither sanded, nor stained, balancing the classic modernity of the beveled glass.

Incremental design.

The design of the table evolved organically through experimentation with the pieces.

Stacked and balanced.

A short time later, the table rests completed, held together though counter-balance, friction, and the weight of the beveled glass top.
