Keeping Agile & Staying Adaptive
Emerald Seven is a creative studio practicing whole-system thinking and integrative design. But what does that even mean? We know, that’s a lot of highfalutin words, but it’s not as complicated as it sounds. Basically, it’s design-thinking meets sustainability: using both linear and non-linear exploration to solve complex problems with focus and sensitivity to the specific and broader contexts.
Our journey to the here and now took us through years studying the technical and theoretical sides of architecture, art history, business, and computer science. Where once we separated the digital and physical, we now integrate – we create experiences that transcend the limitations of media, across the spectrum from the organization to the individual. It’s visual storytelling across scales and across media.
Of course, no matter how integrated you are, failing to adapt is the fastest way to fall behind. We are a small team at Emerald Seven, and that enables us to remain agile, and to adapt quickly to new circumstances. We love to geek out and explore The New, while studying and respecting the beauty, craft, and lessons demonstrated by the The Old.
So that’s our fancy intro that gets at the gist of what we get up to here at Emerald Seven. Feel free to read a little more about our team, or even get into the nitty-gritty of our philosophy & process, if that’s what blows your hair back. Or, if you like what you hear, scroll on down, and let’s talk specifics.
Crafting Digital Experiences from Your Wrist to The Wall
Boundaries & Tolerances: The 10” to the 10’ Experience
The days of old-school desktop websites are long over. The days of “Visit Our Mobile Site!” are long over, too. And now, it’s time to put the days of responsive breakpoints behind us, as well. Let’s make these days the days of fluidity.
The digital world is now inundated with devices of all shapes and sizes, from those that live on your wrist, to those meant to be experienced from the other side of the room. The division of screen sizes is no longer a generalization of desktop, tablet, and mobile. Not only have we added watch and flatscreen to either end of the spectrum, but the spaces in between are becoming increasingly blurred with new devices.
Some users are more connected than ever, and expect to device hop with ease. Others prefer only one device, but, with so many options out there, the size of that one device is increasingly hard to predict. So, how do we deal with all this variability? We don’t limit ourselves by designing & developing for responsive breakpoints, and instead we design & develop for boundaries & tolerances. We build fluid experiences for an adaptable world.
So, maybe you need a brand spankin’ new website? Maybe you want a site that provides a consistent experience, from your clients’ mobile devices to the giant screen in your conference room? And what if the next big thing is something entirely new? No problem. When building for flexibility, modularity is key, and we’re all about it. We like to look at the extremes, then integrate towards balance. We’ll build components you can mix and match, and a system that evolves with you. Sound good? Let’s chat.
Adaptive Reuse as Applied to Digital Places & Spaces
Strategic Augmentation of your Existing Experience
Not everything needs to, or even should be started over from scratch. Just like physical architecture, you can remodel digital architecture. The conceptual approach to remodel an existing website is very similar to the strategy of architects operating in the world of physical architecture.
When a full redesign & build is not on the table, a strategy of adaptive reuse can help bring an existing experience closer in line with modern best practices and style, across the full stack. This process can reduce costs, eliminate rework and waste, and re-purpose what already exists – all while striving to maintain a high-level of both customization and quality in the final product.
In simplest terms, we work with and within the existing structure of the site. Adaptations are surgical. They can be global, such as header and footer adaptations, or granular, such as making the home page hero component more informative, legible, meaningful, and engaging. In many cases, there are numerous opportunities to bring the quality and value of an existing site up, without requiring a blank canvas.
The same is true for identity. Your website, your logo, or even your office, might need a refresh, but you don’t have to throw out the old to make way for the new. Your company didn’t evolve overnight, nothing else needs to either. Let’s tell a story about evolution. Let’s tell your story. Yes, please.

Architectural & Tactile Design for the Tech Mind(ed)
Integrate Your Brand’s Digital, Physical & Tactile Spaces
With a couple of Master of Architecture degrees between us, along with a number of years of working in the architecture, design, and tech industries, we know a little something about helping shape your space. Identity doesn’t end at the screen or at the page.
We can help you make that extra leap that sets design hearts aflutter and represent your vision not just in 2D, but in 3D. From the conceptual, to the build out, we can help you integrate that look & feel that you love from your website, to your printed materials, other integrated media, and even into your office.
Whether it’s for your clients, or whether it’s just for you, we know how much the feel of a space matters. Sounds awesome. Let’s go.
À La Carte, If You Please
Digital Meets Physical
We live neither in only the physical, nor the digital world, and failure lies in ignoring one or the other. Our world is a hybrid. We live, work, and play in both the digital and physical worlds, and so can you. Even if you’re not ready for the whole big deal, we can help with the little things, too. Below, are our à la carte offerings du jour.
Not what you were hoping for? Well, hey, get in touch anyway. In earlier lives, we’ve made jewelry and furniture, and dabbled in photography and luminaire design. We hope, soon, to play with 3D printing, and product design in the context of The Internet of Things (IoT). So, don’t hesitate to ask if you’ve got something in mind. We’re game to entertain whatever you’re dreaming up. At the very least, we’ll help point you to someone who knows a little something more about what you seek.
